Am I Too Old for Shaun T’s Insanity?

Am I too old for Shaun T’s Insanity? Well this is a loaded question and I am sure you will get 5 different answers if you ask 5 different people. If you ask me I am going to say that I don’t think you are too old to do anything you put your mind to. yes, I know I am only 39 years old and I am really hoping that my attitude does not change when i am 79.  The one caveat I would like to include would be to go and see your doctor and get a physical and the green light before starting Insanity. Insanity is definitely extreme cardio and will definitely get your heart pumping.  On that note, if you want to get in some awesome cardio shape then Insanity is for you. All you need is “you” and the will power to get through these work outs for the next 60 days. Yes, I did Insanity and I am 39 but take a look at Teresa’s story below and see what a little determination will get you. Keep in mind she was 50 when she did her first round of Insanity. Yes the big 5-0. Whether you think you CAN or you CAN’T, you are usually right. Don’t let a little thing like someone saying “Insanity is too hard” stop you. Insanity: The Asylum Day 2 Strength

Insanity The Asylum Strength

Insanity: The Asylum day two is Strength. All I can say is wow!  What a great work out. I would kind of compare it to an Insanity work out but with some resistance in the form of some dumbbells.  Love it!  You are doing push ups, pull ups, curls some plyo jumps but every movement was pretty much a complex movement.  Meaning it was not just a curl.  It’s a curl with a jump and an over head press and then a jump.  A pull up and then a push up, then two pull ups and two push ups and so on. Every move is pretty much using multiple muscle groups and I really like this.  It is good to isolate muscles too but it is also nice to mix it up. It is only day two but these work out have been challenging and fun.

These work outs are definitely not something that I am used to so I know I will be stronger and more durable and the end of this 30 days. The Asylum/P90X hybrid schedule looks pretty good too so I might give that a whirl at the end of this 30 days with Shaun T and Asylum.

Is it hard?  Yep, sure is but I like to challenge myself.  This is the only way you will continue to get better.  Push yourself to new highs. Set new goals and keep moving forward. Tomorrow is the Back to Core work out so I am sure I will be in for some more fun filled surprises.  I’ll keep you posted.

Why am I gaining weight while doing Shaun T’s Insanity?  Aren’t I supposed to lose weight with Insanity?

I keep getting this question right around the week 2 or week 3 mark for people doing Insanity. So did some digging to see what kind of information I could find.  Low and behold I found a great post by Chalene Johnson, creator of TurboJam, TurboFire, ChaLEAN Extreme and many other fitness programs. Chalene is talking about Chalene Extreme but what she talks about will apply when starting any new work out regiment.

Here is her take on the subject.

“Probably the most common question I get when I release a new exercise program is, “Help! I’m gaining weight! Am I doing something wrong?” This is a common phenomenon with any new exercise program, Turbo Kick, Turbo Jam, Hip Hop Hustle, you name it! It’s especially common (and temporary) with intense strength training programs like ChaLEAN Extreme or Tony Horton’s P90X.

The motivation to start a new exercise program is almost always to lose weight loss. However, what most personal trainers know and most at-home exercisers do not, is that a new exercise program often can cause an immediate (and temporary) increase on the scale. (Notice I didn’t say weight gain! I’ll explain.) This common increase in the scale is also the reason why perhaps millions of people start and then quickly quit their resolution to get fit.

The temporary weight gain explained:
When someone starts a new exercise program, they often experience muscle soreness. The more intense and “unfamiliar” the program, the more intense the muscle soreness. This soreness is most prevalent 24 to 48 hours after each workout. In the first few weeks of a new program, soreness is the body trying to
“protect and defend” the effected or targeted tissue. Exercise physiologists refer to this as delayed-onset muscle soreness, or DOMS.

This type of soreness is thought to be caused by tissue breakdown or microscopic tears in muscle tissue. When this happens the body protects the tissue. The muscle becomes inflamed and slightly swollen with fluid retention. This temporary retention of fluid can result in a 3- to 4-pound weight gain within a few weeks of a new program. Keep in mind that muscle soreness is not necessarily a reflection of how hard you worked. In fact, some people feel no signs of muscle soreness, yet will experience the muscle protection mechanisms of water retention and slight swelling.

Most people are motivated enough to put up with this temporary muscle soreness. Yet, many, especially those who really need immediate weight loss to keep them motivated in those first couple of weeks become discouraged and quit!

When I worked with a group of 70 test participants during the development stages of ChaLEAN Extreme, this happened. Who was the most upset and discouraged? You guessed it… the women! I’m happy to report with absolutely every single woman (and man) in our group, the weight increase was temporary and never lasted more than 2 weeks before they started to see a major drop in the scale. However, these people had the advantage of working with someone who was able to explain to them why this was happening and assure them the weight would come off if they stuck to the nutrition plan and stayed true to the program.

For those of you who are following the ChaLEAN Extreme phase plan, keep in mind that when you start each phase, your body will be “in shock” again. Don’t be surprised or discouraged if you experience a temporary gain on the scale the first week of each phase.

My own personal example of this is running 10K’s. I don’t do it very often, maybe 1 or 2x a year. Even though I run on a regular basis, when you run a race you push much harder. It’s natural for me to be “insanely” sore the next day. Its also very common for me to see the scale jump 4 pounds the next day from forcing fluids post race and the resulting DOMS. Even though I know the cause of it, it’s still a bummer. We’re all human and hard work should mean “results”. Hard work equals results, but our bodies are amazing machines and they know how to protect us from hurting our selves. Soreness forces you to give those muscles a break Ultimately you will lose the weight and you will change your metabolism in the process.

The key is understanding that this is a normal and temporary and stick with the program!!

When to be concerned:
If you experience a significant weight gain (exceeding 5 pounds) which does not begin to decrease rapidly after the second week, guess what it is??? I’ll give you one hint… you put it in your mouth and chew it. You know it! Your food (or calorie laden beverages). Newsflash friends.. exercise doesn’t make you gain weight. Consuming more food than you burn makes you gain weight!

So if after two weeks you are not losing weight, have gained weight that’s not coming off, it’s time to take a close and honest look at your food intake. It’s time to find out what you’re burning in calories each day. Have your RMR or BMR tested. This can be done for less than $50 and the information is invaluable. It takes out the guess work. Google “hydrostatic body fat testing _______ ” and insert the name of the big city you’re closest too. Companies that do HBFT also do BMR testing. Knowledge is king.

I’m gaining weight, but I’m sure it’s muscle:
Possibly, but if you’re following ChaLEAN Extreme correctly, you should be losing fat and gaining muscle and the fat loss should be much more substantial than the rate at which you can physically put on muscle. This is even true for they guys. Of the 70 plus people in my test group, every single one of them lost body fat and gained muscle and not one of them gained weight. I believe the average weight loss after 4 months was 28 pounds with many people losing 40 plus pounds. Even the men, who as you can see put on a lot of muscle, were seeing huge drops in the scale. We tested their muscle composition at the beginning and at the end and 100% of the participants maintained or gained muscle while achieving substantial weight loss. That’s the key to keeping weight off long term, i.e. muscle. Muscle burns fat. But you’ve heard me say that before.

Moral of the story:
Be patient young grass hopper. You’ll be lean and mean in no time!

Does Insanity Work for Fat People?

ShaunT Insanity Does Shaun T’s Insanity work for fat people?  Fat, skinny, short or tall, you better be in some kind of shape before you even think about starting Insanity.  The Insanity workout is an extreme cardio workout and it will be leaving you dripping in a pool of your own sweat after every workout.  Some of these workouts could potentially burn as much as a thousand calories depending on your intensity.  That is the key with these workouts, you have to “Dig Deep” and push on and continue through.

Will Insanity work for you if you are fat? Of course it will but you have to be able to do the workouts.  If you are having a hard time climbing a flight of stares then Insanity is not the place to start for you. There are other Beachbody workouts you should be considering.  Here is a free workout with Tony Horton which is perfect for you you if your are extremely overweight and are just getting started.  This workout will get you moving and should not get you too frustrated.  Trying to do Insanity and not being able to keep up for most of the workout can be truly frustrating and that is not the best way to start off.  You would probably get discouraged and quit if you were always on the sidelines watching the workout because it was too hard or because you couldn’t catch your breath.

I would say start with Tony Horton’s free workout, grab yourself some Shakeology and replace a meal and you will be off to a fantastic start.  You could even do the Shakeology workouts that will be posted soon on our website soon.  The Shakeology workouts consist of either a 30 or 50 minute workout that you can do 4-5 times a week.  You can do these while you are working your way up to Shaun T’s Insanity.
